Playground Adventure
Text on screen: Wide World of Math.
On screen: A male and female announcer sit side-by-side at a desk.
Phil: Angie, quick question. What is the most iconic sports stadium?
Angie: Fenway Park? The Metrodome?
Phil: You would be wrong. It’s the playground. Every major mathlete got his or her start on the playground.
Angie: Correct, Phil. Let’s watch the highlights of Naya Harris, the playground prodigy-in-training.
On screen: Naya swings on a swing set.
Text on screen: Counting.
Dad: Ready? Here we go.
Naya and Dad: One…
On screen: Her father pushes her on the swing.
Naya and Dad: …two…
Angie: Wait, is Naya counting with Dad?
Naya and Dad: …three…
Phil: I don’t know, let’s go in for a closer look.
Naya and Dad: …four…
On screen: They move in slow motion.
Naya and Dad: …five, six, seven…
Angie: No wonder she’s number one in her division.
Text on screen: Measuring.
Angie: Naya’s ready to exhibit her jumping ability in the Playground Olympics.
Dad: Let’s see how far you can jump, Naya. Go!
On screen: Naya runs, jumps, and lands in the sand.
Naya: Whee!
Dad: [laughs]
Phil: [laughs] Let’s check out the instant replay.
On screen: Slow motion replay of Naya doing a long jump in the sand.
Dad: Let’s see how far you jumped. Let’s count.
Naya and Dad: One, two…
On screen: They measure the length of her jump using their feet. Naya places her feet heel to toe and counts.
Angie: And now Naya’s putting one foot in front of the other to measure the distance of her jump.
Naya and Dad: …three, four…
Naya: …feet!
Dad: Yeah, four of your feet.
Text on screen: Finding shapes.
Dad: Tell me what you see, Naya.
Naya: I see a triangle here.
On screen: She points to a step on a climbing gym.
Naya: I see a triangle there.
On screen: She points to the point of a roof.
Naya: Square, square, square, square…
On screen: She runs across a hopscotch pattern.
Naya: …square!
Phil: Her performance is shaping up to be one for the record books, Ang.
Naya: Circle, circle, circle, circle, circle!
On screen: Naya spins around on a merry-go-round. Phil spins in his chair.
Angie: Phil, you okay?
Phil: Yeah, I’m fine.
Angie: Parents, use caution when counting on the playground. Too many spins and you might end up like…
Phil: [clears throat] I’m going to take five, is that cool?
Angie: Mm-hmm.
Phil: Thank you, Ang.
Angie: That’s all for today, math fans.
On screen: Phil stands up and staggers, dizzy from his spinning chair.
Angie: Play hard, study harder.
