Building The Capacity Of Educators
Suites of resources on a range of early STEAM topics for facilitators and coaches to use in professional learning with educators.
P–3 alignment supports children’s learning and academic success across domains. In this module, we focus on math, science, and computer science. Although P–3 efforts often cover preschool through third grade, Count Play Explore (CPE) promotes early math, science, and computer science learning starting at birth. As you go through this module, reflect on how work with educators of infants and toddlers can complement a focus on P–3.
In your agency, different individuals or teams might focus on math, science, and computer science. When working toward a P–3 alignment approach, you may choose to focus on one, two, or all three areas, depending on your role and the priorities of your agency.

P–3 alignment refers to creating continuity in goals, policies, and practices across ages and grades to promote the quality of children’s learning experiences as they progress in their education. P–3 alignment requires a developmental, collaborative approach to support children’s learning and transitions between grades. Like other subject areas, P–3 alignment in math, science, and computer science involves alignment in:
Reflect:
What work, if any, does your agency already do that focuses on P–3 alignment in math, science, and computer science? Or what P–3 efforts focused on math, science, and computer science outside your agency’s work are you familiar with?

P–3 alignment:
P–3 alignment facilitates coordination and communication around math, science, and computer science learning among preschool through third grade education leaders, administrators, and educators. Coordination and communication help establish expectations and approaches that educators can then use to support individual children’s learning.
P–3 alignment strengthens educators’, programs’, and schools’ abilities to support individual children’s learning progressions. Supporting individual children’s learning progressions ensures that all children have access to high-quality, inquiry-based math, science, and computer science experiences and learn the content and skills that set them up for success as they move across grades.
P–3 alignment helps build a partnership with families to support children’s math, science, and computer science learning as children transition across education systems.
