Why is Early STEAM Important?

Children are born with both the interest and ability to explore math and science.

Through daily interactions, young children observe and explore concepts of quantity, shape, size, and cause and effect. Over time, young children develop additional math and science skills, such as counting, sorting, ordering, using spatial thinking, predicting, and problem-solving.

  • Children experience more positive feelings and thoughts about math and science.
  • Children strengthen their understanding of math and science concepts and skills.
  • Children gain foundational skills for academic success and career access.

  • Educators’ knowledge, feelings, and thoughts about math and science influence their teaching practices.
  • Some educators recognize the importance of providing children with engaging early STEAM experiences. Yet, many educators report being uncomfortable with math and science. For example, some educators feel they know less about math than other areas of child development and learning.
  • STEAM PL systems can support educators’ math and science mindsets, knowledge, and teaching practices.
