Barbara Daniel, Program Manager: And inside the backpack is the materials for one of the activities.
We also launched what we call M.A.T.H. packs, which are early math backpacks that parents can check out that allow them to work with their children at home.
Images on screen: M.A.T.H. packs and their contents are shown. They are clear, child-sized backpacks that have a children’s book, related CPE book guide, and activity materials.
Barbara: Parents have the opportunity to read a story with the children. There's the materials for an activity provided for them, as well as extension questions that parents could ask their children after or during reading, or when they're reading the story, to really help the children understand more about the concepts taking place in the story, and also with an emphasis on math.
On screen: Barbara continues talking to families at her desk.
Barbara: It has the activities that you can do that correlate with the book. There is one activity inside the backpack. There's also extension questions, so as you're reading the book, questions you can ask your child.
Our families are able to check out the M.A.T.H. packs for up to two weeks.
On screen: Various book guides, book covers, and activities are displayed.
Carolyn Pfister, Content Coordinator: When a parent has the book review in their hand and the book, they have some strategies for asking questions that support mathematical understanding. They have some vocabulary that they can explore with their child. They have some suggestions for ways that they can extend what goes on in the book into their daily routines.
On screen: Various screenshots from the Count Play Explore website are displayed. They show online videos, book covers, and the related book guides.
Carolyn: They also have links to other resources on the internet that they could explore.
On screen: A screenshot of the Count Play Explore website with a link to the “Book Guide Document” for the book Hiking Day. Then, various images of book guide documents in English and Spanish. Another screenshot shows related vocabulary words and connections to California foundations and standards for one of the book guides.
Carolyn: Another really useful tool that is associated with those is that on each one of the reviews, there are a number of related books. And so if they enjoy a book and they want to find out more about time; or counting; or math that's related to art and movement; and making things; engineering; science, then they have another book suggestion that they can go to.
On screen: Two children exit the preschool wearing their M.A.T.H. pack backpacks.
Text on screen: A special thanks to the children, families, and staff of the Office of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools’ Lighthouse for Children Child Development Center, without whose help these videos would not have been possible.
