On screen: An educator and a child stand together next to a plant outdoors. The child is inspecting the plant with a magnifying glass.
Letitia Gonzalez: Let's look a little closer.
Child 1: A little bit closer.
Letitia: Look. What is that?
Child 1: It's a spiderweb.
Letitia: Yeah, so let's see. What do you see?
Child 1: A spider in there?
On screen: Preschool Educator Letitia Gonzalez speaks from a shaded area in the garden.
Letitia: Today in the garden, we were looking for insects. We always see butterflies, caterpillars, flies, rollie pollies, worms, and other things that are unexpected.
On screen: The child stands next to plants. An educator hands the child a magnifying glass, and he inspects the plants, looking for spiders.
Child 1: Where's the little spider?
Letitia: You don't see him anymore? Can you find him?
Child 1: I'll find him.
Letitia: Is he still on the plant? Did he go in the dirt?
Child 1: He go in the dirt.
On screen: A group of children and an educator work in a garden, using hoes to look for worms in the dirt. The educator points one out.
Educator 1: Oh wait, I saw something moving. Look, there it is. See? It looks like a worm. What is that?
On screen: A child pulls something from the dirt.
Child 2: A worm.
Letitia: Children were learning if they lived on the grass, in the dirt, if they had wings, if they had legs. Where did they go? What did they eat?
On screen: A group of children surround an educator with a handful of dirt. As they speak, the educator pulls a worm from the dirt in her hand and gives it to a nearby child that has their hand out.
Educator 1: Does the worm have any legs?
Children: No.
Educator 1: No? I don't see any legs either. How did he get there? How does he move?
Child 3: He's moving.
Educator 1: He's slithers. Can you say slither?
Child 2: Slither.
Educator 1: Slithers. He crawls like this.
Letitia: Sometimes we have answers and sometimes we don't. So then we'll look for answers.
On screen: Letitia and a child are sitting at a picnic table. There is a bug in a jar on the table.
Child 4: Bugs can eat bugs too, right?
Letitia: Yes.
Child 4: So I don't want to get my bugs eaten.
Letitia: What do you want to feed him? What do you think he eats?
Child 4: I don't know.
Letitia: Hm… Shall we look in a book?
Child 4: Yeah.
On screen: Letitia flips through the pages of a book with a child.
Child 4: Are there any earth worms?
Letitia: Caterpillar. What's that?
Child 4: Bee?
Letitia: A bee.
I think they had a lot of fun when they were just discovering them on their own, without the teachers’ help. They were helping each other.
On screen: Children stand near a planter, looking for bugs in the dirt.
Child 2: Let’s get it!
Letitia: Did you find something?
Letitia: They get so excited and when they get that excited, we get excited. We just want to show them more and more.
On screen: A child crawls under a table to point out a butterfly. Children toss a few leaves to the butterfly.
Child 5: Look, we found butterfly. Maybe we should give her food.
