On screen: A child stands next to a calendar holding a pointer. The child uses the pointer to touch each card on the calendar that has been turned over to show the numeral.
Children: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven.
On screen: In the next scene, children are seated in rows on the ground. The children clap when they say “ten.”
Educator: What’s next?
On screen: In the next scene, the children are seated on the ground facing the calendar and a child is standing beside it with the pointer. An educator sits on an armchair to the side of the children on the ground.
Child 1: 12.
Educator: 12. Do you remember what a “12” looks like? He wants to be a teenager. So, what is he going to wear in the front?
Child 1: A one.
On screen: The educator and the child with the pointer hold up one finger.
Educator: A one. And look here. We have zero, one—
On screen: The educator stands up and walks to the calendar. The educator points to the “10” card, “11” card, then the card next to the “11” is blank.
Child 1: Two.
Educator: Two in the back, yeah.
On screen: In the next scene, a different child stands next to a large display titled “Circle time center.” One quadrant of the display has an illustration of a gumball machine with different colored circles in it. The child uses the pointer to touch the different colored circles. The child points to, and counts, the circles by color. First, they point to the orange circles, then the red, blue, purple, and yellow circles.
Children: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen..
Educator: 18. 18. How did you count that?
Child 2: By colors.
Educator: Oh, by colors. That was a smart way to do that.
On screen: The child walks to the whiteboard, which is next to the display. The whiteboard has pink cards with white numerals spanning from 1 to 31. The child takes the “18” and puts it on the gumball machine.
Educator: Yeah.
