On screen: The educator sits in an armchair, facing a group of children who are seated on the ground around the outside of the carpet. The educator holds up a book for the children to see.
Educator: The name of my story is “One More Dino on the Floor.” How many dinos do we have on our floor?
Children: 24.
Educator: Dinosaurs?
On screen: The educator holds out their hand, palm down, pointing to the carpet that is empty.
Child 1: No.
Educator: How many dinosaurs?
Children: Zero.
Educator: Zero. Okay.
On screen: The educator holds the book open with one hand so the children can see.
Educator: “One dino stands up on the sand.” Wait a minute. We need a dinosaur. Vivi, you would like to be a dinosaur?
On screen: The educator picks up a mask from a stack of dinosaur masks sitting on the armchair next to them.
Vivi: Yeah.
On screen: Vivi gets up from the ground, walks to the educator, puts on a dinosaur mask, and stands on the carpet.
Educator: Okay. Come on up. Put on your mask. “One dino stands up on the sand. She hums and drums—” Pretend like you’re drumming.
On screen: The educator holds a hand in a fist and moves it up and down. Vivi pats their hands on their legs. Then, Vivi sways their shoulders.
Educator: “A one-girl band. She starts to wiggle head to feet, then bops and boogies to the beat. She hears a swish. What’s this? One more. One more dino on the floor.” So, we have one dinosaur. If one more comes, Jameson, how many are we going to have?
On screen: The educator holds up a finger. Jameson holds up their hand to answer the question.
Jameson: Two.
Educator: Two. Come on up. Come be a dino.
On screen: Jameson stands up and walks up to the educator who holds out a mask. Jameson puts on the mask. In the next scene, Vivi, Jameson, and two other children stand on the carpet wearing dinosaur masks. Other children sit around the edges of the carpet facing the educator who is seated on an armchair holding the book up.
Educator: “They hear a swish. What’s this? One more. One more dino on the floor.”
Child 2: Five.
Educator: How many do we have now?
Children: Five. Four.
On screen: The educator stands up and points to each child who is standing on the carpet and wearing a dinosaur mask.
Educator: Wait. Let’s count because one, two, three, four. We have four now. But if one more comes, how many do we have?
Children: Five.
Educator: Five.
On screen: In the next scene, five children stand on the carpet, each in a mask.
Educator: “They hear a swish. What’s this? One more. One more dino on the floor.” Okay, let’s start with this. How many do we have right now on the floor?
Children: Five.
Educator: Five. If we add one more, how many do we have?
Children: Six.
Educator: Six.
On screen: In the next scene, many children wearing dinosaur masks are sitting on the carpet. The rest of the children sit around the edge of the carpet and face the educator.
Educator: “They grasp and pant, their tongues hang low. The bash is over, time to go.”
On screen: The educator puts the book down on the armchair and holds up all ten fingers. The children hold up ten fingers.
Educator: Okay. I want each of you to show me your 10. Okay. I’m going to have one dinosaur come at a time, put their mask in here. And as they come, we are going to count down. Okay? So how many do we have now?
On screen: The educator places a clear plastic bin containing masks on the ground and then holds up all ten fingers.
Children: 10.
Educator: Theo, go ahead and put your mask back. How many do we have?
On screen: Theo gets up from the carpet, walks to the clear bin, and puts the mask inside before returning to the edge of the carpet.
Children: 10. Nine.
Educator: Nine. Jameson?
On screen: As the educator calls each child, they stand up, place their mask in the bin, and return to the edge of the carpet. The educator puts one finger down for each child who returns their mask, and the children on the carpet who are holding up their fingers do the same.
Children: Eight.
