On screen: In a classroom, an educator shows the cover of the book, The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins, to a small group of preschool children around a table as her coach observes.

Educator: Okay, so the title is The Doorbell Rang. The Doorbell Rang.

Image on screen: A photo of the book cover is shown.

Educator: Can you see there, Mia? "’I've made some cookies for tea,’ said Ma.”

On screen: The educator faces the book pages towards the children while she reads.

Educator: ’That's six each,’ said Sam and Victoria. ‘They look as good as Grandma's,’ said Victoria. ‘They smell as good as Grandma's,’ said Sam.” So Sam said, how many do they have each?

Child 1: Six.

Educator: She said six each.

On screen: The educator nods her head, then she holds up two fingers.

Educator: Because there are only?

Child 1: Two.

Educator: Two.

On screen: The educator points to the two cookies on the page.

Educator: "’No one makes cookies like Grandma,’ said Ma. The doorbell rang.” Ding-dong.

On screen: The educator turns the page.

Educator: “It was Tom and Hannah from next door.”

On screen: The educator places two fingers on the book character on the left page. She then points to two characters on the right page.

Educator: So we have Sam and Victoria and Tom and Hannah from next door.

On screen: Again, the educator places two fingers on the characters on the left page and then points to the two characters on the right page.

Educator: So two friends here and how many are going to join them?

Mika: Two.

On screen: After Mika responds, the educator holds up two fingers.

Educator: Two more.

On screen: The educator moves her hand in a circular motion.

Educator: So how many is that going to be all together?

Mia: Four

On screen: After Mia responds, the educator holds up four fingers.

Educator: Four.

On screen: The educator places two fingers on the characters on the left page and then places those fingers on the two characters on the right page.

Educator: Two and two will come and join them. "’Come in,’ said Ma.”

On screen: Eli points to each of the four characters on the page.

Eli: One, two, three, four.

Educator: Four.

On screen: Eli then points two fingers to the characters on the left page and then points those two fingers to the characters on the right page.

Eli: Wait. Two little kids and two big kids.

Educator: Oh, that's right.

On screen: The educator places two fingers on the characters on the left page and then places those fingers on the characters on the right page.

Educator: So two, plus two more friends will join them.

Mika: Four

On screen: Mika holds up four fingers.

Educator: And that's going to be four.

On screen: The educator confirms this by nodding and holding up four fingers. Mika points two fingers to the characters on the left page and then points those two fingers to the characters on the right page.

Mika: Plus two, plus two.

Educator: Two plus two equals?

Mika: Four

On screen: Mika holds up four fingers.

Educator: Equals four.

On screen: The educator points to the page and uses her finger to circle around all the children on the page.

Educator: There are six here at the table now. And how many will join them?

Child 1: Four

Educator: "’Come in,’ said Ma, ‘You can share the cookies.’” How many will join them? Let's count. How many will join?

On screen: The educator points to each character on the right page as the educator and children count together.

Educator: One, two, three, four, five, six will join them.

On screen: The educator circles the characters on the left page with her finger.

Educator: And we have how many here?

Mika: Six.

On screen: The educator then points to the characters on the right page.

Educator: Six and six more will join them.

Child 1: I don't know what [inaudible].

On screen: Eli starts counting the characters on the page, pointing to each while he counts. Mika also begins counting the characters on the page.

Eli: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. Twelve kids!

Mika: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven…

Educator: Hold on, she’s still finishing. Let Mika finish.

On screen: Mika finishes counting, pointing to each character on the page as she counts.

Mika: …eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen.

Educator: Okay, Eli said 12.

Mika: There's 14.

Educator: Mika said 14.

Child 1: I want to count.

Educator: Do you want to count? Okay, go ahead and count. We're going to count the people sitting at the table eating.

On screen: Another child takes a turn counting, pointing at each character as she counts.

Child 1: One, two, three, four, five, six.

Educator: Six.

Child 1: Seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve.

Educator: 12.
