On screen: An educator sits at a low activity table with a group of 3-5 year old children during snack time. Each child and the educator have a paper towel in front of them. The educator opens bags of crackers and places them in front of each child as she speaks.
Educator: I wonder how many crackers we have. Do you think everybody has the same? Yeah, you think so? I don't know.
On screen: The children and the educator arrange their crackers onto their paper towels and count them out loud.
Child 1: Look, it's a rectangle.
Educator: A rectangle, yeah. How many?
Child 2: 12.
Educator: 12? Ooh, I wonder how many I have.
Child 3: I have one, two, three..
Educator: He has 12. I wonder if we all have the same. Three, four, five…
Child 3: —four, five…
Child 1: Nine, 10…
Educator: Six, seven…
Child 1: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15!
Educator: 15. It’s snack time, so you can eat it.
On screen: The child lifts one of her crackers off the table.
Child 1: Take away one makes 14!
Educator: Yes, you're right. 15, take away one makes 14.
On screen: One by one, the educator arranges her crackers on her paper towel and counts out loud while the children watch.
Educator: 14, 15, 16, and one that I bit, so 17. But if I ate this one, 17 minus one?
Children: 16!
On screen: Another child points to each cracker on his paper towel as he counts out loud.
Child 3: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.
Educator: How did you make 17? Child 3: I took these three.
On screen: The child points to the last three crackers that he counted.
Educator: You added three?
Child 3: Yeah.
Educator: You put three. So when we add, we’re putting more.
On screen: Moments later, another child speaks to the educator from across the table.
Child 4: I made five and five and five equals 20.
Educator: Let's try.
On screen: One at a time, the educator raises both her hands, showing 10 fingers.
Educator: Five plus five. And you put five.
On screen: The child raises both of his hands showing another 10 fingers.
Educator: No, that's 10.
Child 4: 20!
Educator: But that's 10. You said five plus five, and then you put up five.
On screen: The child raises one hand.
Educator: Okay. So how much is that?
Child 4: 20?
Educator: Let's count. Ready? One, two, three—don't count yours yet. Or do you want to count yours first? Okay, count yours first.
On screen: The child counts the fingers on his raised hand, and then the educator counts their fingers.
Child 4: One, two, three, four, five.
Educator: Six, seven, eight, nine, 10. Count with me.
All: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.
Educator: What was it? Five plus five plus five equals?
Child 1: 15.
Educator: 15, yeah. But if you add your other five, then that is 20.
Child 4: Yeah, that's what I was trying to do.
On screen: The educator raises both hands showing 10 and the child raises both of his hands to make a total of twenty.
Educator: It'll be five plus five plus five plus five.
