"A good coach can change the game. A great coach can change a life." -John Wooden
Think about a time when someone helped you learn a new skill. This person may have been a coach, mentor, teacher, or family member. Take a moment to reflect on your relationship with this person.
Coaching is a relationship-based process that supports educators’ professional learning and growth. It is grounded in a collaborative learning relationship between a coach and coachee.

Let’s observe an example of early math coaching. In this video, Jon, an early math coach from Count Play Explore, engages in a coaching session with preschool educator Eva.
Consider Jon and Eva’s coaching relationship and how they collaboratively plan and take turns teaching a small-group math lesson.
Reflect:
What did you notice about Jon and Eva’s coaching relationship? In what ways did they work collaboratively?

Coaching offers educators support and feedback individualized to their specific needs. Coaches build on educators’ strengths and ensure that support and feedback are relevant and useful (Germeroth & Sarama, 2017).

When coaching is part of educators’ professional learning, they are more likely to practice new skills in their work with children (Joyce & Showers, 1996, 2002).
Coaching can also help improve educators’ confidence and uncover their math mindsets, or how they feel and think about math. Through individualized support and feedback, educators can create more positive math experiences for children (Bay-Williams et al., 2014; Chapman & Mitchell, 2018).
Educators who receive ongoing, on-site early math coaching have a clearer understanding of why and how to use new teaching strategies. As a result, educators’ knowledge and skills improve, which can positively impact their instruction and support for children’s math learning (Clements & Sarama, 2009; Germeroth & Sarama, 2017; Yoon et al., 2007).
