Rocio Jimenez De Reyes, Pre-K Educator: My goal for them was to see that five has different arrangements.

On screen: Three photos feature paper templates with 5 squares in various arrangements. Ocean-themed objects are on top of each square. In the first photo, the squares on the template are arranged in a line, and the objects have been placed on each square, following the template. In the next photo, the objects are rearranged on another paper template, now with one in each corner and one in the center. In the third photo, the objects are rearranged on another paper template in a row of two and a row of three.

Rocio: It's not only a sequence in line, you can put a group of two, two and one, and that makes five. That is going to help them to do addition in the future. And I want them to play with that idea.

On screen: Rocío leads an activity at a table with a group of children. Each child has a paper template in front of them and various ocean-themed objects.

Rocio: Can you make a different arrangement? Take these here.

On screen: Rocío moves a handful of the ocean-themed objects from the one child’s pile to another child, named Sol. She then taps an empty square on Sol’s paper template.

Rocio: Oh Sol, how many are you missing to get five? Look Sol, how many are you missing?

On screen: Sol picks up an object and places it on the remaining spot. Meanwhile, another child finishes arranging objects on their paper template. He points at the new arrangement.

Child 1: It's three plus two.

Rocio: Equals to?

Child 1: Five.

Rocio: Can you make the last arrangement?

On screen: Rocío hands the child a new paper template to complete. The child accurately moves the objects to the new template.

Sol: Look, I have three here.

On screen: Rocío turns back to Sol.

Rocio: Oh, how many do you have right here?

On screen: Sol and Rocío point to each toy as Sol counts.

Sol: One, two, three—

Child 1: Three plus two.

Sol: —four, five. Five.

Speaker 1: Can you show me five? Awesome.

On screen: Rocío and Sol hold up five fingers and high five each other. Then, the second child points at his completed work.

Child 1: Three plus two.

Rocio: That's a group. Equals to?

Child 1: Five.

On screen: He holds up three fingers up on his right hand and two up on his left hand.

Rocio: Yes

Text on screen: A special thanks to the children, families, and staff of the Foothill 3 Head Start Preschool, without whose help these videos would not have been possible.
