Facilitator Resources
Building The Capacity Of Educators
Suites of resources on a range of early STEAM topics for facilitators and coaches to use in professional learning with educators.
Observe this video of CPE partner Aileen Rizo facilitating a PL session. In this video, she shares her lived experience with math as a young child. By expressing her own story, Aileen models openness and vulnerability as part of the learning process. Consider how Aileen’s story might encourage participants to share their own experiences in STEAM.
Reflect:
Consider Aileen’s role as a facilitator of a STEAM PL session. How might her story support participants’ engagement in the PL? Use the My Journal to record your thoughts. Save your progress in your downloaded version.
Professional learning (PL) describes the learning process that adults experience to improve their teaching practice. It often involves ongoing and collaborative opportunities to help adults build their positive mindsets, knowledge, and practice to support children’s learning. These opportunities might be referred to as:
In this module, we will use facilitators to refer to individuals who plan and lead PL sessions and participants to refer to educators who participate in PL sessions.
PL provides opportunities for adults to engage actively as learners (Knowles, 1980). Adult learners:

Consider these four characteristics of adult learners. Which one resonates most to you as an adult learner? Why?
CPE provides PL resources for trainers, coaches, and staff working with educators of young children on STEAM topics. CPE resources support educators to:
CPE’s approach to PL focuses on building on the existing skills and experiences of early educators. This strengths-based approach involves facilitators recognizing and elevating the unique strengths, goals, interests, and lived experiences of participants. As a result, participants are encouraged to share their expertise, learn collaboratively, and engage in enriching learning experiences.
CPE’s approach is grounded in research that highlights the various benefits of STEAM PL for early childhood educators (Chen, 2021; Jamil et al., 2017; Spyropoulou & Kameas, 2024; Wahyuningsih et al., 2020). Strengthening the following areas for educators can promote positive outcomes for children, such as increased STEAM engagement and knowledge (McClure et al., 2017).
When educators participate in active, playful STEAM PL, they may experience positive feelings, such as joy, curiosity, and a sense of belonging in STEAM. These feelings may lead educators to develop more positive STEAM mindsets and confidence in their ability to teach STEAM (Jamil et al., 2017).
Focused PL can deepen educators’ understanding of STEAM concepts and their knowledge of children’s STEAM learning. Educators can be more responsive to children’s current and ongoing learning when they are aware of how children develop STEAM knowledge and skills in a topic area (Chen, 2021).
STEAM PL helps educators gain new teaching strategies and resources from experienced facilitators and other participants. Educators reflect on what they learn and apply new knowledge and skills directly into their practice (Wahyuningsih et al., 2020).
During STEAM PL, educators work together, share ideas, and support each other’s growth. They can network with peers and experts in the field, which can lead to ongoing support and resource sharing. Learning alongside others invites educators to reflect on and strengthen their teaching practice (Spyropoulou & Kameas, 2024).
Reflect on a time when you attended a PL session. The session topic could be related to early STEAM or another content area.
